Freelove and Blackbirds

FREELOVE AND BLACKBIRDS (working title) is a portrait of acclaimed Pacific Islands writer Sia Figiel and her journey to find her true center.

From her childhood in a Samoan village to her life in the United States as an award-winning author, the documentary shows her challenges living with diabetes and obesity–diseases that disproportionately impact Pacific Islanders–and with manic depression. By capturing her creative process as well as her efforts to manage her mania, depression, blood sugar and weight, the film tracks her surprising and illuminating journey toward mental, physical and cultural healing.
